Nicholas Kalapos wrote:Just so we draw a distinction between RPG's and Table Tops. I wanted to list the Strategy Games (Table Tops) here. So here are some of my Favorites.
1. Car Wars by Steve Jackson Games
2. BattleTech by FASA (I mainly liked the early one with the anime mech designs)
3. Warhammer by Games Workshop (this includes both 40K and Fantasy)
4. Squad Leader by Avalon Hill
5. BattleFleet Gothic by Games Workshop
6. RISK by Parker Brothers (For being a classic and the first Strategy game I ever played)
7. Axis and Allies by Milton Bradley
8. Harpoon by Adventure Games Incorporated then GDW
9. Star Fleet Battles by Task Force Games
10. The Awful Green Things From Outer Space by Steve Jackson Games (The second strategy game I played taken out of a Dragon Magazine issue)
For all of you who want to say Chess, Backgammon, Checkers, etc. Yes, I played them before any of the ones listed and they too are strategy games.
I love the list and it brought back some sweet memories of the packaging on those Car Wars games. I think I found an old station wagon tile unpacking from my move recently.
1. Car Wars (the images this brought to life changed family road trips forever)
2. Axis and Allies (finding a gaming partner was almost as hard as winning the thing)
3. Broadsides (it felt like seven hours of setup and six weeks of reading the rules but nothing made me feel more like a pirate)
4. Stratego (simple rules but enough strategy to keep me up at nights planning my next game)
5. Risk (there will never be a simpler premise that opened my eyes and imagination to the posibility of global domination)
6. Crossbows and Catapults (I believe this one was made by Mattel but it turned the rec room into Midevil Europe a few nights per week).
I can't remember how many times the group I used to play with would modify the rules of the game to throw some RPG elements into them. We'd have the introduction of "Super Troops" in Risk and Axis and Allies.
Stuff goes here, not there, but here.
